Korea’s Cafe Culture
Korea is a country with a rich café culture that holds a special place in the hearts of its people, especially those living in big cities. Cafes serve as a space for socializing with friends, working on the laptop, enjoying solitude while watching the hustle and bustle of the city streets, or simply unwinding with a cup of coffee after a busy day. However, for those living in Geoje, an island with a long coastline of 328㎞, cafes hold a unique appeal. Here, cafes offer the opportunity to experience the pleasure of sitting in the sun, enjoy the glistening ripples of the ocean and watch the stunning views of the ocean while sipping coffee.
Beautiful Cafes in Geoje
While the majority of cafés in big cities are franchises, independent cafés dominate Geoje’s café scene. Since moving to Geoje in the spring of 2022, I have visited several cafes known for their attractive scenery. These cafes offer a diverse range of atmospheres, from cozy and warm with bean bag chairs on the lawn to hip and trendy with designer furniture, and some that combine modern and traditional styles. However, all offer the luxury of watching the glistening blue ocean and its beautiful surroundings (Photos below are just a few examples of cafes in Geoje).
On The Sunset: Perfect Location for Meeting and Relaxing
One of the most popular and Instagram-worthy cafes in Geoje is “On The Sunset” (온 더 선셋 in Korean; This café’s name, “On The Sunset” is not grammatically correct; it should be phrased as “At sunset” or “In the sunset”.). Located by the sea, the café offers us the chance to admire the sunset on Geoje Island. Unfortunately, I have yet to witness the beautiful sunset view at this café as my visits have always been in the morning or early afternoon. However, I am planning to visit in the late evening to finally experience the fascinating sunset over the ocean. Situated conveniently on the way to Geoje Bridge, which leads to a highway to Tongyeong and all the way to Seoul, the café is the perfect spot to say farewell to friends visiting from Seoul over a cup of coffee or a glass of colorful sweet beverage.
Beautiful Interiors and Surroundings
The café’s interior and menu are equally impressive. A quick glance at their Instagram account will give you a glimpse of the colorful and artistic beverages they serve, the chic and trendy interiors, and the stunning views of the sea.
The three-story café with a roof offers unique atmospheres with different chair arrangements and interiors on each floor. However, my favorite spot is the roof, where one can lie on bean bag chairs and leisurely watch the blue sky and ocean while enjoying a drink. The soft breeze and the calming sound of the waves create a peaceful environment that throws away all my worries and gives a luxurious escape from my usual, everyday life. The wooden trail surrounding the café offers several points for photo-taking, making me feel like I am walking over the sea. The clear seawater, the blue sky, and the stunning view all around create a sense of happiness that is hard to find anywhere else.
